Void …

It’s neither Up nor Down
Just a straight line

Which is leading me to nowhere
And leaving me behind with just a ‘void’

Emptiness that teases me

It’s Love

It’s meant to be healing

Take me back …

Take me back to
the days of my life,
when I used to smile
just for ‘me’,

take me back to
that dreamy world
where no boundaries were found
and where I felt truly free,

can’t see the truth here
its all blur around,
the more I remove the fog
the more the fog surrounds,

the reflection I see today
is not so much like ‘me’
I can feel the difference between
What I am and what I pretend to be,

With the passing days I experience
Rush and emptiness at the same time,
I try to be the
‘more of myself’
everytime …

it’s me and my mind with whom
I want to be for now,
But the more I try to be ‘me’
Is when I again get lost somehow..

Surely I learnt to differentiate
The ‘fake’ and the ‘real’
To hide the scar, even when it
didn’t heal,

but all these things just don’t matter
because now I know,
that these are just ‘things’ meant not to ‘feel’-
but just to ‘show’,

really want to go back to the days
when expectations didn’t really hurt,
back to the days –
when everyday of the year
seemed to be a ‘rebirth’ !!!

નહીં બનતો..

તું પ્રેમી ના બની શક્યો, તો પ્રેમાળ બની જા,
પણ આ પવિત્ર સંબંધમાં, તું વિક્ષેપક નહીં બનતો.

સંસારી બની જા, શક્ય નથી સઘળું જો ત્યાગવું,
પ્રભુનું નામ લજવે એવો, સાધક નહીં બનતો.

વિચારશૂન્યતા યોગ્ય નથી, બન તું વિચારક!
બસ ગંધાતી વિચારસરણીથી ભરચક નહીં બનતો.

દીકરી છે, માની લીધું, પણ એ આંબશે આકાશ,
જડ માનસિકતાથી તું અવરોધક નહીં બનતો.

તું બનજે કવિ, ને ના બને, તો વાચક બની જાજે,
પણ ઉગતાને ઉતારી પાડે, તે વિવેચક નહીં બનતો.

I know it’s still the heart of mine,
That wishes for you to be around

I know its never gonna happen
That I will search for you near and you will be found

May be I am thinking too much at this time

Feels to be complete when near

“Mere paas Maa hai …” … Sahir Ludhianvi

“Of all the rights of women, the greatest is to be a mother’ so today on the international day of women, we pay our tributes to women and the ‘mother’ in them.

“Swami Tinhi Jagaacha Aai vina Bhikaari” …

Goes the lines are from a poem in ‘Marathi’, it means that… Even the lord of all the ‘three worlds’ is a beggar without a Mother…

Yes, every one of us understands the value of this word ‘mother’ and the value of her unconditional love she showers on us. How she cares for her child, how she serves a child for his whole life till she is alive.
Those who have been fortunate to have a mother and also those who are deprived of a mother’s love know very well the value of this word ‘mother’.

In our society, culture and traditions we have highest regards for our Mother. There are numerous stories of a ‘mother’s sacrifices as well as how some of them were the inspiration behind making of our great heroes and those many famous personalities and not to forget those who may not have got the publicity or the limelight, or those whose stories of great courage, stories of successful life inspired by their mothers may not have reached to us.
Also there are many who have been able to make a mark in their life and have achieved a lot only because their Mothers and their Mothers have been a great inspiration for them and played an important role in shaping of their destiny.

Today, we salute them all and salute their ‘womanhood’ because after all before being a mother they all are ‘women’.

A girl child – a daughter, a sister, a wife- better-half, a mother – a woman plays so many important roles in and around us.
She loves, she inspires, she cares, she gives meaning to life, she is mother, she is friend, she is daughter, and she is not only wife but simply a life…
A beautiful message describes a woman as ‘ the willingness to listen, the patience to understand, the strength to support, the heart to care and just to be there … that is the beauty of a woman’..

Today also happens to be the birth anniversary of poet-lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi.

He has talked about woman’s plight, her sufferings, how she has been treated for years in the society, what challenges she face, what are her problems and many more things associated with a woman. Through his poetry and songs he has time to time discuss womanhood and have thrown light on the contemporary world where woman have been neglected, insulted and tortured.

We are all aware that Sahir Ludhianvi shared a strong bond with his mother and many of his poems on woman have been inspired by his mother’s hardships and challenges she faced during her life.

Most of the books on Sahir Ludhianvi find mention of his strong bond of relationship with his Mother and many of us are aware of this through the information in books on Sahir Ludhianvi or other sources like interviews of famous film personalities or information available on the internet.

But I don’t think that much in details have been discussed about his mother and how she faced problems after separating from her husband and upbringing of a son to a poet lyricist of this great stature that Sahir achieved in his life.
Today we throw some light on the above based on the information available in few books on Sahir Ludhianvi and some info on the internet.

In the ‘introduction’ of the book ‘ Jaag Utthhe Khwaab Kayi- Sahir Ludhianvi ’ (Penguin Books India-Yatra Books-2010) editor Murlimanohar Prasad Singh mentions that if one has to understand about Sahir’s personality, ideology, emotions, thoughts and dreams and his poetic soul and if one has to know Sahir, one has know about his mother Sardar Begam.
To put his point further he has cited the novel Mother by Maxim Gorky published in 1906 and based on which in 1926 a Russian movie Mother was made and it was directed by Vsevolod Pudovkin.
The plot of the original novel as mentioned on the Wikipedia is as given below;

In his novel, Gorky portrays the life of a woman who works in a Russian factory doing hard manual labour and combating poverty and hunger, among other hardships. Pelageya Nilovna Vlasova is the real protagonist; her husband, a heavy drunkard, physically assaults her and leaves all the responsibility for raising their son, Pavel Vlasov, to her, but unexpectedly dies. Pavel noticeably begins to emulate his father in his drunkenness and stammer, but suddenly becomes involved in revolutionary activities. Abandoning drinking, Pavel starts to bring books to his home. Being illiterate and having no political interest, Nilovna is at first cautious about Pavel’s new activities. However, she wants to help him. Pavel is shown as the main revolutionary character. Nevertheless Nilovna, moved by her maternal feelings and, though uneducated, overcoming her political ignorance to become involved in revolution, is considered the true protagonist of the novel.

We can understand how in a male dominated society a single woman has to face the social concerns, whether she is a ‘widow’, a divorcee, or a ‘woman simply abandoned by her husband’.
The conditions in any ‘time span’ would have been the same and the reality must have been more harsh or continued to be harsh as we see it today and in such circumstances if a woman dedicated her whole life for her child then it is as exemplary as we see in the case of Sahir Ludhianvi.
For ages the story would have been the same and a woman must have fought more courageously to sustain herself in the adversity of life, and when the whole world is against her. It is difficult to face criticism from all side in around yourself and still continue this journey of life.

I have tried to visualize  of how Sahir’s mother would have faced the challenges of her times and how she was able to do upbringing of Sahir and his love for poetry even in those turbulent times of her personal life when she was passing through and how her stubbornness, righteousness, virtuousness, her strong mental condition, the values , the ethics she followed, is depicted in the various poems/songs that Sahir has penned while writing the songs on woman, a mother, or a mother-son song or a father-son song for that matter.

So when we have lullaby from his pen his words are full of dreams full of love of a mother for her child;

mere raajdulaare
tohe sapnon ki nagri se
nindiya pukaare
pariyon ke baalak
taaron ke bhes mein
tujhko bulaane aaye
chanda ke des mein
sapnon ka raaj hai ae

One can think of the greatness of Sardar Begam, Sahir’s mother, who inspite of her own disturbed life when she left her husband’s home, when he married for 12th time, and she has taken her child with her and taken up his upbringing.
One can imagine how little Sahir was being fed, what values were being inculcated in him and how his life was being shaped.

(When I shared this song earlier, it reminded me of the famous poem ‘the hand that rocked the cradle, is the hand that rules the world’)

When Sahir’s mother left her husband’s home and taken the child Sahir with her, her husband tried to pressurize her to come back home or either leave the child with him.
But instead of succumbing to his demands Sardar Begam file a case against her husband for divorce and she fight for the custody of Sahir.
Sahir’s father had even threatened of killing Sahir.
During all this time Sahir’s mother must have surely been worried about the uncertain future of her child and a thought losing her child or even what will happen to the child if she is not there must have passed through her mind.

We could find these worries articulated in Sahir’s songs;

tujhko haalaat ki aandhi se bachaane ke liye
aaj main pyaar ke aanchal mein chhupaa leti hoon
kal ye kamzor sahaaraa bhi na haasil hogaa
kal tujhe kaanton bhari raah pe chalnaa hogaa

At times she may have even cursed the circumstances in her life and the fear of losing her own life may also have stuck up her mind, but whom she should trust for her child’s safety;

jeewan ki dagar mein
kaun banegaa teraa aasraa
bedard nagar mein
tu mere pyaar kaa phool hai
ke meri bhool hai
kuchh kah nahin sakti
par kisi kaa kiyaa tu bhare

Seeing his mother struggling, going through trials and tribulations a child at young age can understand the reality but given his age and his limitations he could assure his mother that one day he will stand for her

Maa tu aansoo ponchhle apne
rone ki koi baat nahin
jab tak tere saath hoon main
mat soch ke koyee saath nahin
aur zaraa sa paal de mujhko
phir main tujhko paaloonga
jo maangegi so laaunga
koi baat na taaloonga

And when this child grows up he vows to eliminate all the struggles all the problems from his mother’s life;

apne paas bithaakar tujhko

And that is why even when Sahir entered adulthood his mother was the centre of his being and when Sahir established himself as a successful lyricist he does everything to ensure that his mother is happy and whenever she was upset Sahir would get tense and he could not be at rest till he get to know that everything is well with his mother.

The troubles she had gone through in bringing up Sahir, after separating from her husband and all the difficulties of a being a woman is what we find expressed in various poems of Sahir and those that later on become part of films.

Sahir’s mother left him in 1976 and after four years of her Sahir left us on 25.10.1980.

(note : On the second thought, and knowing about the relationship between Jan Nisar Akhtar and the few years Javed Akhtar spent with Sahir Saab it will be interesting to know if the character of mother and the famous dialogue ‘ mere paas maa hain’ from the film Deewaar was at any time inspired from Sahir’s life. Rather I strongly feel that it must have been.
Recently I even tried to speak to Javed Saab but he was out of Mumbai for some work)

विश्व पर्यावरण दिवस पर विशेष – कहाँ पे जाये कचरा … !!

(आज विश्व पर्यावरण दिवस के साथ साथ हम ‘समाजशिल्पी’ ब्लॉग की सातवीं सालगिरह भी मना रहे है.
इस अवसर पर इस ब्लॉग के संस्थापक सदस्य मेरे मित्र श्री. आशीष तिलक तथा श्री. भारत भाई भट्ट को, और आप सभी पाठकों, मित्रों को ढेरों शुभकामनाएं )

हम लोग कितना कचरा निर्माण कर रहे है, इसका अंदाजा भी शायद हम नहीं लगा सकते. लेकिन एक सफाई वाले कि नज़र से देखे और सोचे, तब पता चले कि यह विषय कितना गंभीर है.
मैं इस सम्बन्ध में ‘सांख्यिकी’ या ‘आंकड़ों’ के पचड़े में नह पड़ना चाहता. क्यों कि मैं जानता हूँ कि वास्तविकता कहीं ज्यादा भयंकर है और आंकड़े इस समस्या के समाधान का, या इसमें दिन –ब-दिन जरुरी सुधार का पैमाना नहीं बन सकते और न ही बन पाएंगे.
हजारों लाखों टन कचरा हर रोज हमारे आस-पास परिसर में लाकर ढेर कर दिया जाता है. इस कचरे का फिर क्या होता है? ये कूड़े का ढेर आखिर किस सागर में समाता है ? क्या अलग अलग तरह का कचरा छंटनी किया जाता है? क्या पुनः चक्रित होने वाली चीजों को पुनः प्रयोग करने के लिए प्रकिया में लिया गया है? क्या हर चीज़ को उसकी विशिष्टता के आधार पर वर्गीकृत किया जाता है/ किया गया है?

क्या प्रदुषण न फैले इसका ध्यान रखा गया है? और सबसे बड़ी बात कही कोई अवशेष बाकि तो नहीं रह गए है. क्या हर वस्तू का उसकी विशिष्टता के आधार पर उचित निरूपण किया गया. जो खतरनाक और घातक रसायन या अपव्यय है उनके निबटारे में क्या जरुरी सावधानी बरती गयी है.

जिंदगी कि भाग दौड़ इतनी तेज हो गयी है कि किसी के पास यह सब सोचने और उस पर मंथन करने का समय ही नहीं मिल पा रहा है.
परिणाम है प्रदुषण – महा भयंकर प्रदुषण, प्रकृति के ऋतू चक्र में बदलाव , वातावरण में परिवर्तन. शायद इसीलिए अब बारिश में वैसी बारिश नहीं होती जैसे हमारे बचपन के दिनों में होती थी. अब तो कभी आधे किलोमीटर परिक्षेत्र में बरसात होती है तो थोडा आगे जाते ही आपको एकदम सुखा भी मिलता है. अब घनघोर वर्षा तो होती है लेकिन लगातार नहीं होती , कई दिनों तक तो होती ही नहीं.
और बीते हुए कुछ वर्षों में ‘जलवायु’ में जो बदलाव देखे गए हैं उससे हम सब अछि तरह वाकिफ है ही , जैसे की – इस साल भीषण गर्मी पड़ी, कई शहरों के तापमान में साल दर साल बढ़ोतरी हो रही है, पिछले साल कहीं भीषण सूखा पड़ा, तो कहीं भीषण बाढ़ आयी, और बारिश औसतन कम रही, जब ज़रूरत थी तो बारिश नहीं आयी, और जब आयी तो बर्बादी लेकर. यह सब घटनाएं पर्यावरण में बदलाव के संकेत है, जिससे हमें सबक लेना चाहिए. और प्रकृति के बचाव के लिए हर संभव प्रयास करने चाहिए.
जो स्वच्छता मुहीम २ अक्तूबर से चलायी गयी, उस पर कहाँ और कितना अमल हुआ इसका भी समय समय पर समीक्षा होनी चाहिए. क्योंकि पिछले कुछ दिनों में मुझे कई बार कार्यवश कुछ बड़े-छोटे शहरों कि यात्रा करनी पड़ी और वहाँ ज्यादातर मैंने पाया कि ‘गन्दगी’ का ‘साम्राज्य’ अभी भी जारी है.
दुःख इस बात पर हुआ कि उन् शहरों के जो प्रमुख सरकारी दफ्तर है जो जिला-स्तरीय कार्यालय है उनके पास तक ‘कूड़े-कचरे’ का ढेर पाया गया और प्रतीत होता था कि वहाँ पर कई कई दिनों तक सफाई हुयी ही नहीं है और होती भी नहीं है.
(कुछ दिन पूर्व अहमदाबाद से वड़ोदरा जाते हुए एक्सप्रेस-हाईवे से पहले अहमदाबाद शहर का कूड़े का ढेर देखने को मिला, जिसको शहर से बाहर इक्कठा कर जलाया जाता है, ये ढेर अपने आप में एक बड़े ‘टीले’ में तब्दील हो गया है और दिन ब दिन इसका स्वरुप्प और विकराल होता जा रहा है.)

तो हमारी ‘अनास्था’ का दौर अभी जारी है. हमारी ‘बेरुखी’ अभी ‘खत्म’नहीं हुयी है !!

और जाहिर है कि केवल किसी एक दिन अगर प्रधानमंत्री हाथ में झाड़ू लेकर सफाई करेंगे और सोचेंगे कि सब कुछ सही होने जा रहा है, तो वैसा नहीं होगा. लोगों को स्वयं ये जिम्मेदारी उठानी पड़ेगी. और तो और जो लोक प्रतिनिधि है उन्हें तो विशेष प्रयास करने होंगे और उन्हें ये करने भी चाहिए क्योंकि राज्य में या जिले में वे एक ऐसी सरकार का प्रतिनिधित्व कर रहे है, जिसने देश में बदलाव लाने कि बात कही थी, जिसने ‘घिसे-पिटे’ तरीकों से लोगों को ‘निजात’ दिलाने का वायदा किया था (चुनाव से पहले). लेकिन लगता है सरकार नयी नयी योजनाएं शुरू कर और उनका ढिंढोरा पीटकर खुद ‘घिस-पीटकर’ वापस ‘सत्ता’ कि ‘हसीन’ दुनिया में खो जाती है …
फिर आज एक टीवी चैनल पर साबरमती नदी में कूड़ा-कचरा फेंकते हुए कुछ लोगों को दिखाया गया और उनसे पूछे गए सवालों का जिस ‘बेशर्मी’ से इन लोगों ने जवाब दिया, उससे जाहिर होता है की अभी भी हमारे देश और देश के संसाधनों के प्रतिप्रति, पर्यावरण की रक्षा के प्रति और यहाँ तक की हमारे बच्चों के भविष्य के प्रति हम कितने उदासीन और संवेदनहिन् बनते जा रहे है … ऐसे में टनों टन इकठ्ठा हो रहे ‘कचरे’ की परवाह कौन करता है …

‘Jan Gan’ ke ‘Man Ki Baat’ -Deeply Disappointed or Hopes Alive?

The NDA government at the Centre has completed a year in office.

During the previous UPA government’s term from 2009 to 2014, in 2009 while assuming the power in its second term after 1999 the earlier Congress government, had promised a lot to achieve in their first ‘100 days’, and which we all know what they achieved, leave alone the first ‘100 days’, but even during the whole term of five years.

So, when the Country went to poll in April-May 2014, the urge for an ‘overall change’ in the public brings in the new BJP government at the Centre.

When BJP come to power a media house conducted a ‘survey’ asking the people their ‘hopes from the Modi government’ (wherein I also get a chance to share my views with them)

It was on 23rd of May, that I contact them and send a mail, wherein I refer them two posts on my blog and I write to them as below;

And later on, on 26th May I had specifically sent this message then;

‘We hope the new government totally accountable towards the public and will establish law and order in the society. It should establish the ‘rule of the law’, should instill faith in the public, should rebuild INDIA as a ‘living soul’ and would promptly react to the problems of ‘common man’…”

Apart from the above when the agency called to me on 26.05.2014 (I hope I am correct) I told them that what I wish to see after this government’s taking over was an ‘overall change in the attitude’ of the government machinery towards people and this government will ensure to awake the ‘soul of the nation’ taking all into one thread and helping in to build an “atmosphere of peace and harmony” among the people of India.

So, if we have to assess the improvements under the new government at the center, we can do this only by tracking with our hopes and aspirations from the new government or the disappointments from the earlier UPA rule or the reasons for which people vote for ‘change’.
On 28.04.2011 I had written this article ‘Deeply disappointed’ wherein I had mentioned my thoughts about the various issues and the sentiments about the social issues that we ‘the people of India’ are concerned with.
It was the time, when the movement led by Anna Hazare was in full swing and the country embarked upon a new beginning …
I am reproducing the same article below again and wish that the readers share their views and comments about how they view these issues and there dealing with by the new government – the ‘Namo’ government.
While the media took on the ‘Performance’ of the new government within the last one year I think it is better to assess where the ‘common man’ stand today after ‘four years’, and not after ‘one year’, since the ‘issues’ concerning with the general public matters much more, irrespective of who came to power.
And I am sorry to say that, inspite, of the ‘hope’ and the ‘hype’ for development and ‘acche din’, there are still many core issues that this government needs to tackle with..

I hope that the ‘list of disappointments’ given in the below article rightly expresses our ‘Hopes from the Namo Government’ and the ‘grave areas’ where this government still needs to put in ‘serious and sincere efforts’…

When our respected Prime Minister expressed his ‘deep disappointment’ over Anna Hazare’s fasting, it left me hurt, and the many disappointments that I feel time to time and in our daily routine which gets backtracked with time, started hammering me.
These are the ‘disappointments’ that I carry and for that matter most of my fellow countrymen also carry, but we do not let our respected PM know (?) all these.
Now, taking this opportunity I would like to let our PM knows how much disappointed we are; I feel disappointed because still after 62 years of independence many of us are still deprived of basic amenities, many do not get food and die of starvation, ‘shelter’ for all is still a ‘dream’, many villages are still without ‘electricity and ‘power-cuts’ & ‘load-shedding’ continue to remind us that ‘development’(?) is still a ‘distant dream’. Even we do not have ‘pucca’ road at many places and wherever they are the condition is not good and the roads are not repaired and maintained properly.
Atrocities on children have increased, children lost are not traced back, Rape and Ransom killings have become a social menace, cricketers are paid more than the jawans who lost their lives while fighting at border and in house with Maoists, naxalites and mafias.
We are absolutely helpless on the increasing Crimes, Rape, Ransom killings, Ragging and to add this the 4th evil R of our society –Reservation issues- which freely allows to loot the national property and all innocent suffers on account of road blockages-train blockages etc and moreover nation looses revenue on account of non-functioning of our day to day businesses.
When so many do not get food for even one time our MPs are served with subsidized food. Billion of rupees are wasted due to non-functioning of the Parliament. I feel very disappointed when maximum farmers commit suicide from the state which the Agriculture Minister belongs to.
Serious issues are easily politicized to reduce their gravity and public attention is diverted by creating fraction among society and their various groups.
I feel agonized when I cannot call back the non-performing and corrupt MPs and replace them with a new one.
When traffic restrictions during Ministers and Prime Minister’s visit left someone die because of not getting medical treatment or reach hospital within time, what should we feel like?
Our jawans are lost to frequently fighting infiltration in Kashmir whereas the likes of Afzal Guru and Kasab enjoy our hospitality in jails. Attack on parliament left many jawans killed and similarly we lost officers like Karkare in terrorist’s attacks but the ‘culprits’ and ‘masterminds ‘ are still alive. Martyr’s families are treated badly; even their widows are treated badly and terrorized by antisocial elements.
Where the common man is struggling to make both ends meet together Corrupted politicians and goons are really enjoying the party. Corruption is scaling newer heights and increased to such an extent that honest officers are burnt alive and harassed to the level that they commit suicide.
And to summarize at last- appointment of corrupt CVC, Sex scandals, sex-for-marks scandals, never ending scams, Inflation, price –rise, killing of RTI activists, aborting girl child, honor killings, Jessica –Mattoo murder, Nithari case, Aarushi case, railway accidents-unmanned railway crossings-crimes in trains, the innumerous murders and rapes reported and not reported, the central agencies and human rights cry for the criminals died in en-counter in Gujarat but sleeps when murders, rapes, burnt alive incidents took place in UP. Environmental issues are also politicized and used to discriminate between states. You as a ‘CEO’ of this country have to own this and responsible for all.
And last but not the least my respected Sir, a person like you instead of supporting Hazare’s movement
and welcoming his step was ‘disappointed’… and this is enough to disappoint all of us.
At least the public has not cheated you; they have given you a second term, But for the FOUR days of Anna’s fast we feel cheated by the ruling party and that too a party like ‘congress’ which took four days time to agree to Hazare’s demand.
(I have deliberately delayed the publishing of this post, so that the disappointments are not faded with time. I hope that the list will reduce with time instead of growing further).

તું
જોતો રહ્યો રાહ
સારા પવનની,

તું
માંજતો રહ્યો દોરીને
કે પતંગ કપાય નહિ,

તું
કરતો રહ્યો હંમેશાં
બે પતંગ સાથે ઉડાડવાની કોશિશ,

ને ઉત્તરાયણ જતી રહી..

એક પતંગ, એક દોરી અને થોડી હવા,
બસ આટલું પુરતું નથી જીવી લેવા માટે?

કોઈને ઉડાડવી ગમે,
કોઈને કાપવી
કોઈ બસ દૂરથી જોઇને ખુશ થઇ લે,
ને કોઈ રાહ જુએ ગમતીલાં પતંગના કપાવાની
તો કોઈ વડી લંગરિયા નાખીને લૂંટે પણ ખરાં

કેટલું કહી જાય છે માનવમન વિષે
આ ઉત્તરાયણ!
